Rootstown is part of the Western Reserve. Named after Ephraim Root, a wealthy lawyer and founder of the Connecticut Land Company.
Rootstown was settled in 1802 and became a township in 1810 and grew into a farming and residential community. Agriculture was the main industry with dairy farms, orchards, a saw mill, grain crops, a hotel and many supporting businesses. Another early asset was the railroad and canal-shipping network.
Education and religion played an important part in the early years of Rootstown. The First Congregational Church was organized in 1810 and the First Methodist Church in 1815. St. Peters of the Fields was established in 1868.
